This year Sustainable Harvest hosted the second annual Seed to Cup Origin Challenge at La Encañada in Rioja Peru. They hosted many of the semi-finalists from this year’s World Barista Championship as well as the World Latte Art Champion and the new champion from Mexico. One purpose of the competition is to expose the world’s top baristas to the production side of coffee in order to better equip them to tell the story of coffee to their customers around the world.
Sustainable Harvest (a coffee importer) clearly sees tremendous value in baristas as the ambassadors of the entire coffee supply chain. Through their expertise and professionalism, excellent baristas can help to improve the experience of specialty coffee customers. There is no question that baristas have made considerable inroads in the effort to expand the market for specialty coffees, which at the end of the day is of great importantance of coffee farmers who need access to robust quality oriented markets in order for their farms to be economically sustainable.
